Physician Groups Oppose Cigna Payment Policy on Multiple Procedures
On April 18, 2023, ISASS joined more than 100 other medical societies in requesting that Cigna immediately rescind a new policy that will create a disincentive for unscheduled medically necessary care and place a significant administrative burden on healthcare professionals.
Effective May 25, 2023, Cigna will require physicians to submit office notes verifying a significant and separately identifiable service with all claims, including evaluation and management (E/M) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes 99212, 99213, 99214, and 99215 and modifier 25. ISASS and the other signatories stated their opposition to this policy and believe it is inconsistent with CPT instruction and guidance. In their request, the medical societies cite current CPT and Medicare instructions on separately identifiable services.
The societies hope to see this policy altered before the May 25 implementation date and will continue to update membership on Cigna’s policies as well as other payer policies in this area.
